What Is Life Worth?

“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.  So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.  And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.”

-Genesis 1:26-28

On the sixth day, God created man.  He made man unique, for man was made in the Image of God.  Imago Dei.  Man was the most precious and God-like part of God’s creation.  He was different.  He was valuable.  And although tainted with sin, the soul inside each and every man and woman is still precious and valuable in the sight of his Creator.

The beauty of the value of life is that it is not bound by race, gender, age, or any other physical or mental limitation.  We were all created by the same God!  Every black man is valuable in God’s sight.  Every white woman is valuable in God’s sight.  Every teenager.  Ever child with down syndrome.  Every weak and sick child.  Every strong soldier.  And yes, every child that has yet to be born.

I believe that abortion seems so permissible today because human life has lost its value in the eyes of many.  Many people today believe that human life is just as valuable as animal life.  And no, the natural result of that thinking does not exalt animals.  It degrades humans.  This is the natural result of the increasingly secularized society we live in, a society that rejects the objective truth of God’s Word and subjects everything to individual interpretation.

With the belief that man and animals are equal, it is no surprise that abortion has become prominent.  If man is equal to animals, then there is nothing wrong with picking and choosing which ones should be born and which ones should not.  Sadly, many children who are detected to have a deformity or disability are aborted.  That is not an expression of human rights.  That is ethnic cleansing, and it further degrades the value of human life.

May we who claim to be prolife continue to recognize the truths we embrace.  May we follow our belief in the value of human life through with actions.  May we realize that there is absolutely no room for racial superiority in prolife circles, because we believe that all life is created equal.  Key word: created, not born.  And finally, may we strive to be people who fight for life, not just birth.  Where there is suffering, may we meet it with the gifts God has blessed us with.

Always remember: Life is valuable, so don’t waste it on things that don’t matter.  Fight for life.

What does the Bible say about abortion?

Some Common Questions Prolife Individuals are Asked

  1. When I look at an enfeebled elderly person, or a child with Down’s syndrome, or a severely deformed newborn, etc., I see an immortal soul temporarily inhabiting the physical body. That is what so many people fail to see – perhaps because they do not want to see.
